Ready for Bed

Well, we’ve spent the last four nights camping. First in an RV park in Mulege where we got some laundry done and ate tacos. Then we spent two nights on the public beach of Playa Coyote (pic above) in Bahia Conception next to about a million US and Canadian RVs and Campers. Last night we camped next to a family in a small Ejido called Rosarito. I’ve been reading Americas by Peter Winn and, from that, I think the Ejidos (community lands) were an attempt by the Mexican government to breakup the large haciendas owned by the elite and give the land back to the people. I’m not sure how well the system has worked as the book implies that these Ejidos have not been given any support such as electricity or running water. This seems to be true at Rosarito, but the language barrier prevented in depth conversation about their lives. Matt was accepted quickly when he agreed to hold Coca, the pet snake.

We are now in Loreto and in a hotel (and showered!). We have two days to Ciudad Constitucion and three days to La Paz, where we will arrive just in time for Carnaval.

I also wanted to provide a little update on something I know has been on everyone’s minds—Sera. Danielle reports that she is doing well. Apparently, it didn’t take too much for Sera to convince Danielle to allow her to sleep under the covers. Sera has claimed the Library as her own (though still allows Danielle in with a payment of pets). She is still a bit afraid of the large living room but venturing out more and more. Sera has made friends with Danielle’s awesome cat statue, which had been under a blanket for a couple weeks due to the life-like shape (the sculptor modeled it after his own cat who then hissed at the completed work).

  1. Glad you’re able to manage laundry and tacos - which seem to be the main priorities.

  2. PS. And glad to hear Sera is doing well.

  3. Hey guys,

Its Sarah’s Husband Gregg just wanted to congratulate you on taking the plunge on such an adventure. Its fun to live vicariously through such wild and crazy cats such as yourself. Cold here, as if you care. How many miles a day do you guys usually ride? Good luck and god speeeeed.

    Gregg

  4. tacos are the most important thing. laundry is a distant second.

we are riding between 40 and 70 km per day. our original goal was about 80k/day which i think we will be able to do in the next month or so, depending on the mountains. this month has been a training month for us as i hadn’t actually been on a bike ride for about a year when we started, so i had a bit of catching up to do fitness-wise. it’s been going well though, the bodyparts faring the worst are the hands and the butts. hopefully they will adjust soon!

we are planning to post about the more mundane parts of the trip soon since we have gotten several questions about what we eat etc.
