Out of the desert miscellany

We pulled into Santa Rosalia today just before dusk, after two grueling days of battling fierce headwinds and hills (we didn’t even get any rest on the downhills). I’ve been downloading the GPS data from the bike computer daily, and I usually give a check to see if we’re picking up wireless, and sure enough, today we hit the jackpot. We thought since we had the opportunity, we’d upload a few pictures from the trip so far:

One other thing, Garmin finally released their Mac version of their Training Center software, so we have the ability to look more closely at our GPS data. I’ll probably post the occasional elevation profile when we’ve had especially brutal days. Here’s a link to today’s profile:

789 meters of climbing today in all, including a couple of sections where we had to get off and walk the bikes. And nobody has to tell me that with Mexico City and the Andes ahead that we’re just getting started!

  1. Apparently birote is a kind of bread (not sure why it’s written on a cactus.). It seems there are two kinds–salted and unsalted–and the salted variety is vital for making good tortas ahogadas (one of my favorite things, and something I hope you’re going to be eating plenty of!). Here’s the link from the Spanish version of Wikipedia:

Have fun, and bring home some good souvenirs for me! Any recipes you can finagle out of people would be MUCH appreciated.

  2. Thanks Candace! There is this huge boulder field near Catavina where everyone and their mother has written their name or some other saying on the boulders. The cactus got some of the stray graffiti. We are hoping to get some cooking lessons along the way, so we’ll be sure to take good notes.
