Curvas peligrosas!

We´re in a small town called Calamu (sp) after having biked our first three consecutive days. Our plans to have blog posts worked out on the computer and then upload them at internet cafes has been foiled somewhat by the lack of computers with USB ports that are easily accessible. So I´m winging this a bit…

A couple of days back, when we last posted, we were taking a rest day and checking out the port town of Ensenada. There were a few turista areas down by the port that we went past. There was also a very cool museum that showed the history of the indigenous people of Baja, as well as the history of the missions. It was quite remarkable—at the end of the little blurbs of nearly every mission (there are 20+ I think), they noted that the mission closed down due to the fact that all the natives were killed by disease…brought by the missionaries, of course.

When we finally hit the road again, as we went through Ensenada, the highway took a jog and when we caught up with it again, we saw a four-lane divided highway with Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Burger King, McDonalds, etc. Sadly, it was just like being back home.

OK, so how’s the biking? Well, I would definitely recommend that anyone wanting to bike the Baja peninsula do it during the winter. There aren’t a lot of other tourists, the traffic is low, and it doesn’t get too hot during the day. The nights are a little cold (as we found out when we camped at an RV park a couple nights ago), but it warms up quickly once the sun comes out.

Sorry we’re a little behind on the uploads. We’re taking lots of pictures and I’ve been keeping all the GPS data, so we’ll put some stuff up when we get a chance.
