Highway 1

The distance itself was pretty easy. I could have gone further, but aiyaiyai the climbing! We rode around 50 km (30 miles) and climbed over 300 m (1000 ft). Given my current lack of training, it would have been tiring for me on my racing bike, but the extra 70 lbs of weight on the loaded bike made it exhausting. We rested a lot and were also rewarded for the climbing with a nice downhill finish to El Sauzal. Surprisingly, I am not sore today, a bit tired, but not sore.

The first part of the ride was along the ocean, where it seems developers want to build luxury condos and gated communities in any and all open spaces. In a couple years the stretch from Tijuana to Ensenada will be like Southern California with its continuous development from the boarder to LA.

We are now staying at the El Sauzal Hostel. It’s a great place to stay and the woman who runs the hostel, Maria, is wonderful. She has hosted lots of bike travelers and has their emails from down the road printed out and in a binder so we can get information from them.

Ensenada seems to be our last chance at ATMs and internet for 800 km, or probably 20 days. So, don’t be worried if you don’t hear from us for a while.
