Political upheaval

For those of you reading who are perhaps as ignorant of world politics as we are, there have been a couple of big political events recently that may impact our travels:

Battle of Oaxaca—We have learned about this some from our roommates, who are part of a Oaxacan group in Seattle. Just tonight, their group held an art auction to raise money for humanitarian needs, and there is also going to be a screening of the film Granito de Arena at 6pm on Monday 11/13 at the Ethnic Cultural Theater on the UW campus.

Daniel Ortega returns to power in Nicaragua—Although Ortega claims that he is not an enemy of the U.S., I somehow doubt that our government will view him the same way. Although perhaps we are so obsessed with terrorists that we won’t be as worried about the old “red scare” (Although things may change when people realize that we elected a socialist senator in last week’s election).
