The Apple of my eye

Last weekend, we got two very important pieces of news.

  1. Our friends Tiffany and Andy spent almost $1000 on internet on their 8 month Asian adventure.
  2. The UW Computer store was having a fire sale on the discontinued G4 iBooks.

Owning up to the fact that we are both internet junkies and we’ll need someplace to store digital photos (at least temporarily), we decided that it might be nice to have a small laptop for the trip. In theory, we could write blog posts offline, and then only pay for service as necessary for quick uploads. They were selling the 1.33 GHz model for $699. Tax and another stick of RAM bumped the total up to $800. Although the low end Macbooks are quite sexy as well, we decided that we would cry more when our Macbook got stolen or broken on our trip, seeing as how it would have run us over $1100.

I like the computer…but I’m still a little worried about whether or not we made the right decision. It’s 5 lbs of extra weight that will be fragile and a target for thievery. Come to think of it, I don’t even know that we’ll save any money…I don’t know whether or not Tiff and Andy had a laptop with them. Hmm…best not to think too much about such things.

Next on the to-do list is start coming up with an equipment list. I don’t even want to think about how much cr*p we are going to be carrying on our bikes :)

P.S. first post from the new computer! woohoo!
